Cyclocross Racing

E(CX)ess baggage

I’ve been meaning to write a kit list for all the junk equipment that I cart about to cyclocross races before the end of the season, so come next Autumn I don’t have to worry about remembering everything I need. I thought I’d post it here in case it’s useful to anyone.

For the race

  • Skinsuit/jersey and shorts or longs
  • Arm warmers if necessary
  • Base layer
  • Sports bra
  • Socks
  • Gloves
  • CX shoes
  • Helmet
  • Heart rate monitor
  • Garmin
  • Race bike – tubeless tyres approx 20 PSI (depending on conditions)
  • Pit bike

For before the race

  • Zip off trousers
  • Jersey/softshell
  • Buff
  • Waterproof jacket
  • Waterproof trousers (and snap band for right ankle)
  • Race licence
  • Turbo trainer, spare wheel with turbo tyre and skewer (usually this season I’ve found a field or hill to warm up on, but tomorrow I’m going to try a more structured warm up. Note to self: must finally get round to learning to ride the rollers).
  • Warm gloves
  • Track pump
  • Allen keys (just in case)

Nutrition

  • Gel (for the start line)
  • Bottle with sports drink (for during warm up)
  • Bottle with water (to make recovery drink)
  • Shaker bottle with recovery shake powder
  • Flask of hot chocolate or coffee
  • Bars/snacks
  • Money for a burrito!

After the race

  • Towel (as I am a hoopy frood – in this case the towel is useful for getting changed under)
  • Change of clothes
  • Boots/trainers
  • Warm jacket
  • Ridiculous bobble hat
  • Bucket and scrubbing brush (so far only on Mull when I was racing two days in a row. Yes, I am vaguely contemplating a pressure washer…)

May be edited if I remember other stuff…
